Imam was a poor young man who had come from his village to complete his higher education in Cairo. He rented a small room from a shafhat who was the owner of a grain mill. She was attracted to the imam and they had an affair, but he was really in love with Salwa, who was the daughter of an acquaintance of his father in Cairo. Shafhat threatened him and called the police, accusing him of stealing her jewellery.
